If possible we should try to sign our binaries or at least sign our installer so we will no longer get the warning about installing an application from unknown origin.

Probably this will require a commercial certificate.

This does require a certificate, which generally requires an CA to do a background check and verify that the certificate holder is trustworthy. This also costs several hundred dollars on a periodic basis. You probably will want the certificate private key to be held by very few people.

Of course, anyone can create their own certificate using makecert, but that certificate didn't come from a CA and won't be trusts, so the user will still get the warning.
